Interview TipsPreparing for Your First Job Interview
Getting called for an interview is exciting — and a little scary. Here's how to prepare so you walk in feeling confident.
Before the interview
- Research the company. Visit their website and understand what they do. You don't need to memorise everything — just know the basics.
- Plan your outfit. Neat and clean is more important than expensive. Iron your clothes the night before.
- Know where you're going. If the interview is in person, plan your route and leave early. If it's online (Zoom or Teams), test your connection beforehand.
Common questions and how to answer them
"Tell me about yourself"
This isn't your life story. Say your name, where you studied, and what you're passionate about. Keep it under 60 seconds.
"Why do you want this position?"
Connect something about the company to your own goals. "I saw that you work with young people in education, which is something I care deeply about."
"What are your strengths?"
Pick two or three things and give a short example for each. "I'm a good communicator — at school I was elected as the class representative."
"Do you have any questions for us?"
Always say yes. Ask: "What does a typical day look like in this role?" or "What qualities make someone successful here?"
During the interview
- Make eye contact and smile
- Speak clearly — it's okay to take a moment to think before answering
- Be honest. If you don't know something, say "I'm not sure, but I'm eager to learn"
- Thank them at the end
After the interview
Send a short thank-you message if you have their email. Something like: "Thank you for the opportunity to interview today. I enjoyed learning more about the role and I look forward to hearing from you."
