How to Write Your First CV (With No Experience)

Many young South Africans feel stuck because they don't have work experience to put on a CV. The good news? You have more to offer than you think.

1. Start with your contact details

Put your full name, phone number, email address, and the city you live in at the top. You don't need to include your ID number or a photo.

2. Write a short personal statement

Two or three sentences about who you are and what you're looking for. Example: "Hardworking matric graduate from Soweto with strong communication skills. Looking for a learnership or entry-level position where I can grow and contribute."

3. List your education

Include your school name, the year you matriculated (or expect to), and your subjects. If you got a bachelor's pass or any distinctions, mention those.

4. Add your skills

Think about what you're good at — even outside of school. Examples: computer literacy, public speaking, teamwork, time management, fluency in multiple languages (this is a big advantage in SA!).

5. Include any experience — even informal

Helped at a church event? Volunteered at a community clean-up? Tutored younger students? These all count. Describe what you did and what you learned.

6. References

Include two people who can vouch for your character — a teacher, community leader, or pastor. Always ask their permission first.

• Proofread carefully (ask someone to check it)
